West Coast Swing: Often called “Sophisticated Swing”, this is the official California State dance. Inherently interpretive, West Coast Swing is a sexy and exciting dance! There is freedom for personal self-expression within every pattern. This expression may arise through footwork or body stylings, partner reactions, etc. The basic foundation is a combination of 6- and 8-count patterns, with the flexibility to extend patterns in 2-beat increments and add syncopations in order to allow the dancer to interpret the music in a distinctly individualized manner. We suggest you learn a few easier dances first before attempting West Coast Swing, as even at a beginner level West Coast Swing is an advanced dance, though is well worth the effort it takes to learn it.
